The Orange County Chapters of the WP&BC and the National Institute of Pension Administrators (NIPA) are pleased to bring you two speakers from the U.S. Department of Labor who will provide the latest updates from the DOL, including:

  • Nontraditional investments in 401(k) plans
  • Perspectives on the qualified plan audit process
  • Best practices for selecting an auditor/audit firm
  • National and regional EBSA enforcement priorities
  • The consultant advisor project and field agent expectations of plan sponsors/service providers when under audit
  • Acceptable disclosures to plan participants and from service providers to plan sponsors
  • What it means to be an ERISA fiduciary

Doors open at 7:30 a.m. for check-in, breakfast and networking.  Our program will begin at 8:00 a.m. and this program will end at approximately 9:30 a.m.  The registration fee includes a full breakfast buffet and hosted parking in the self-parking lot at the Hyatt.

The reservation deadline for this event is Wednesday, January 23.

Our speakers:

Marcus Aron, CPA, Office of Chief Accountant, Washington D.C. Mr. Aron has over twenty years of experience in working with audits of ERISA-covered plans.  He is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of EBSA's CPA Firm Inspection Program, providing technical assistance to plan filers and plan professionals, and providing ERISA-related accounting and auditing expertise within EBSA.  Mr. Aron is a certified public accountant and holds a B.B.A. degree with a major in accounting from the College of William and Mary in Virginia.

Miguel Paredes, Supervisory Investigator, EBSA, Pasadena, CA.  Mr. Paredes has been very involved in the Los Angeles Regional Office's complex and high profile investigations, including cases involving financial service providers and complex financial products.  His current role is a Supervisory Investigator and supervisor of LARO's Rapid ERISA Action (REACT) Project, the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Project, and the Voluntary Fiduciary Correction Program (VFCP).  Prior to joining the Department, Mr. Paredes was a senior investigative auditor at MassMutual Financial Group.  Mr. Paredes has a B.S. in Business Administration from the California State University, San Marcos and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts.  He is a Certified Internal Auditor and a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
